Mirror Images - Figures

Mirror Image : The image of an object, as seen in a mirror, is called its mirror reflection on mirror image. In such an image, the right side of the object appears on the left side and vice- versa. A mirror-image is therefore said to be laterally inverted and the phenomenon in called Lateral Inversion.

Mirror Images - Figures : It revolves around the concept that the candidate has to identify the mirror image of the figure. In these type questions a figure is given in the question and four options are given the candidate has to anaylse the question and then identify the out the four options which figure corresponds to the figure formed by the lateral inversion of the question figure.

Illustration : In the following question, choose the correct mirror-image of the figure given in the question from amongst the four alternative figures given against option A, B, C and D.

A

B

C

D

Answer : A.

Explanation : On analysing the question figure we find that there are three elements in the figure.

  • The first element is parallelogram which is tilted towards the right of the candidate and it is filled with vertical lines so on lateral inversion it will be tilted towards the left but the line will remain vertical as on lateral inversion the direction of lines will not change. On analysing the options the figure given in option C is rejected as the parallelogram is tiled towards the right.
  • The second element is a trapezium ( a quadrilateral with to parallel and two non parallel sides) and the smaller of the two parallel side is towards the left of the candidate so on lateral inversion it will be towards the right. On analysing the options the figure given in option we see that only figure A satisfies the condition.
  • Moreover the third element is a triangle with horizontal lines is also laterally inverted in figure A .
  • Hence A is the correct option.

Illustration : In the following question, choose the correct mirror-image of the figure given in the question from amongst the four alternative figures given against option A, B, C and D

    A

    B

    C

    D

    Answer : D

Explanation : On analysing the question figure we find that there are three elements in the figure.

  • The first element is figure of a man rowing the boat which is seated at the right end of the boat with respect to the candidate and is facing towards the left end of the boat so on lateral inversion it will be seated at the left end of the boat and should be facing towards the right end of the boat On analysing the options the figure given in option B and D fulfill this condition so option A and C are rejected.
  • The second element is a boat which is a symmetrical figure so will not be affected by lateral inversion.
  • The circle at the end of the row man is holding lies at the end of the curve, but in figure B it is lying below the curve whereas the figure D is following this condition so figure B is rejected.
  • Hence D is the correct option.
